Qualifications to Check Before Selecting a Bathroom Renovator

Required Qualifications
When selecting a bathroom renovator, ensure they hold at least one qualification from each of the following two groups:

• Group A: An existing NSW trade licence in carpentry, joinery, plumbing, or wall & floor tiling, or a Certificate III level training in the trade or trades they perform.

• Group B: Completion of various "units of competency" and/or satisfactory completion of related TAFE certificate courses, such as tiling.

For example, if a plumber is replacing your bathtub and also doing tiling work, they must have a valid plumber's licence and a Certificate III in tiling.

Major Renovations
For major bathroom renovations, you will likely need to hire a licensed Building Contractor. In NSW, only licensed contractors are authorized to enter into contracts, hire subcontractors, and supervise workers on the job.

Understanding Owner-Builder Work
Owner-builder work includes supervising and coordinating the construction, alterations, repairs, or additions to a property where the market cost (including labor and materials) exceeds $10,000. This applies to single dwelling-houses, dual occupancy, or secondary dwellings that require development consent or are considered complying development under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.

• Note: An owner-builder permit is only issued for dual occupancy in special circumstances. Although an owner-builder permit is not a builder’s licence, as an owner-builder, you are responsible for the building work as a fully licensed builder would be.

 

Licences to Check Before Hiring a Bathroom Renovator
In NSW, builders and tradespeople must be licensed to perform building work where the total cost of labor and materials exceeds $5,000. For full bathroom renovations, it is recommended to hire someone with a Builder’s licence rather than a Kitchen, Bathroom, and Laundry renovation licence.

Licence Numbers

• - Builder's Licence: Ends in a "C" (e.g., Redfish Constructions Licence Number 201570C).

• - Kitchen, Bathroom, and Laundry Renovation Licence: Starts with an "R." Be cautious and ask additional questions about the suitability of businesses with an "R" licence for your bathroom renovation project.

Certain trades, including plumbing, draining, and gas fitting, require a specialist contractor licence.

Licensing Requirements
For bathroom renovations exceeding $1,000 in value (labor and materials), the individual, partnership, or company you hire must hold a current Builder’s Licence issued by NSW Fair Trading.
